Interoperability Among Knowledge Organization Systems: Mapping the MeSH and LCSH Systems

Olson, Anton J

Description

Presented at the APLIC 50th Annual Conference, April 25, 2017 held in Chicago, Illinois.

Abstract

As the number of knowledge organization systems (KOS) continues to proliferate, and the increasing tendency of library catalogs and databases to include more than one of them, the integration and interoperability of these multiple KOS continues to be a problem. There are several techniques that can be used to address this problem, one of which is to map equivalent terms in two or more of the KOS. This is the project that Northwestern University began in 1990 with the mapping of the Medical Subject Headings System and the Library of Congress Subject Headings System (and vice versa). The project has continued up to the present. This presentation will briefly describe the project, some of the issues that we had to solve, and the process of keeping the mapping data current.
