- Title:
- Spatial analysis of HPV vaccination rates in Chicago: utilizing geographic information systems software to analyze rates of adolescent HPV immunization across clinics of Chicago
- Description:
- A Northwestern University Capstone Project
- Abstract:
- Background: Persistent infection of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer in women and can lead to reproductive health problems in both men and women (1). Although this is widely recognized by health professionals and understood to be preventable by a basic vaccine series, certain cities of Chicago are still struggling to vaccinate their adolescent patients. This is a widely recognized issue, and one that (unlike many other public health problems) has a solution. Methods: This analysis utilized geographic information systems (GIS) and de-identified clinic-level data from the Chicago Department of Public Health in order to visualize the rates of HPV vaccination across Vaccines for Children providers in the city and to determine areas of the city that education or communication efforts to improve the HPV vaccination rate need to be directed towards. The visual, geospatial data was also subject to statistical analysis in order to determine statistically significant hot and cold spot trends of vaccination across Chicago clinics. Results: The trends observed in this analysis are consistent with other public health disparities in the cityzip codes on the south side of Chicago maintained low rates of vaccination across their clinics while the northern and western zip codes seemed to perform far more superior. Specifically, zip codes 60628, 60620, and 60643 were cold spots for this data and represent most of the well-known southern Chicago neighborhoods most affected by the clear health disparity. On the other hand, zip codes 60634, 60707 and 60639 represented the hot spots for high vaccination rates and populated the citys medical district and academic hospitalcommunities.Discussion: It is important to recognize that racial and health disparities go hand in hand, and this analysis brings to light a similar point. By understanding the patients that are served in clinics with significantly low rates of HPV vaccination, the city can better understand the types of interventions that will facilitate the citys improvement in their rates of HPV vaccination. This analysis is important and relevant for the Chicago Department of Public Health and can be used to further launch client-centered or communication-based interventions in clinics themselves in order to improve vaccination recommendations, increase series completion rates and bring the city up to meet their goal of 80% adolescents vaccinated against HPV.

Neurons responsible of the sensory modality are found in DRGs. Here, as sunlight, neuron axons (in yellow) expend from the ganglia supported by satellite glial cells (in cyan). DRG model is relevant to study neuropathic disorders.

- Social-Emotional Learning as a Strategy for High School-Based Mental Health Promotion
- Abstract:
- Adolescence is a critical time for public health promotion efforts. Adolescents experience great physical, social, and emotional changes, which places them at an increased mental and behavioral health risk (Heyes and Hiu, 2015). There has been a growing focus on universal mental health supports in schools. School-based mental health promotion efforts vary greatly across the United States due to differences in policy, funding, and support for programs, and there is only fragmentary evidence about the success of different approaches. Social emotional learning (SEL) has become an increasingly popular universal school-based mental health promotion approach that builds cognitive, affective, and behavioral competencies to support student mental health and well-being (Durlak et. al., 2011, p. 406). The promotion of social and emotional learning supports aspects of mental health through the provision of related skills and the enhancement of environmental contexts that promote the health, academic, social, and emotional success of learners (CASEL, 2008, p.1). School districts play an important role in social emotional learning, as they often set the policies and guidelines for the design and implementation of SEL programming. This paper will use Chicago Public Schools (CPS) as a case study of how school districts can support social emotional learning. Using a qualitative analysis method based on thetriangulation of multiple information sources, CPS policies and programs will be described and evaluated. This study examines whether a coordinated, integrated approach like the one CPS employs can be a successful model for other school districts. This case study will highlight best practices and demonstrate how social-emotional learning can be strengthened through policy and program changes at the district level.

- Title:
- Simulating Fish Patterns
- Description:
- 2019 Honorable Mention, Northwestern Scientific Images Contest. Every symbol on this picture represents a different pigment cell in a fish skin pattern. We created this pattern using computer simulations of a mathematical model. Zebrafish have stripes on their skin, but some fish that evolved from zebrafish have spots like these. Whether fish have spots or stripes, their patterns form because brightly-colored cells move around and organize themselves into a pattern. Think of these cells like birds interacting to form a flock in the sky they follow rules of behavior to make beautiful patterns. With mathematical modeling and simulations, we search for the rules of behavior that pigment cells follow to create zebrafish stripes. When we change these rules in our model, different patterns form, like the spots in the picture. This shows one way mathematics is used to study the evolution of skin pattern diversity in nature.

- Title:
- Series II. Correspondence between G.V. Black and F.S. McKay on mottled enamel of teeth
- Abstract:
- Between 1907 and 1915 Dr. Black and Dr. McKay, a practicing dentist in Colorado, had a running discussion concerning mottled teeth, or Colorado Brown Stain. Dr. Black spent the summer of 1909 in Colorado Springs to gather information and make observations. Their work culminated in the publication of Mottled teeth: an endemic developmental imperfection of the enamel of the teeth heretofore unknown in the literature of dentistry. (See: Dental cosmos, 1916; vol. 58, pp. 129-153, 477-484, 627-644, 781-792, 894-904)After Dr. Black's death, McKay continued their studies and discovered that fluoride in drinking water was the causal agent of the imperfection, noting the effect on enamel, but the lack of dental caries in those who had the condition. This was a critical breakthrough in understanding the etiology and prevention of dental caries. This discovery is the foundation for water fluoridation, which is the single most effective public health measure to inhibit tooth decay.
