- Walking with Ears: Altered Auditory Feedback Impacts Gait Step Length in Older Adults
- Description:
- Three spreadsheets containing the average (mean) and variability (standard deviation) of the step data, as well as the demographic information, collected across all 20 participants and 6 conditions associated with the study titled "Walking with Ears: Altered Auditory Feedback Impacts Gait Step Length in Older Adults."
- Abstract:
- Auditory feedback may provide the nervous system with valuable temporal (e.g. footsteps) and spatial (e.g. external reference sounds) information that can assist in the control of upright walking. As such, hearing loss may directly contribute to declines in mobility among older adults. Our purpose was to examine the impact of auditory feedback on walking in older adults. Twenty older adults with no diagnosed hearing loss walked on a treadmill for three sound conditions: Baseline, Ear Plugs, and White Noise. We hypothesized that in response to reduced temporal auditory feedback during the Ear Plugs and White Noise conditions, participants would adapt shorter and faster steps that are traditionally believed to increase mechanical stability. This hypothesis was not supported. Interestingly, we observed increases in step length (p=0.047) and step time (p=0.026) during the Ear Plugs condition versus Baseline. Taking longer steps during the Ear Plugs condition may have increased ground reaction forces, thus allowing participants to sense footsteps via an occlusion effect. As a follow-up, we performed a Pearsons correlation relating the step length increase during the Ear Plugs condition to participants scores on a clinical walking balance test, the Functional Gait Assessment. We found a moderate negative relationship (rho=-0.44, p=0.055) indicating that participants with worse balance made the greatest increases in step length during the Ear Plugs condition. This finding suggests that participants may have actively sought auditory feedback with longer steps, sacrificing a more mechanically stable stepping pattern. We also hypothesized that reduced spatial localization feedback during the Ear Plugs and White Noise conditions would decrease control of center of mass (COM) dynamics, resulting in an increase in lateral COM excursion, lateral margin of stability, and short-term Lyapunov exponent. However, we found no main effects of auditory feedback on these metrics (p=0.580, p=0.896, and p=0.056, respectively). Overall, these results suggest that during a steady-state walking task, healthy older adults can maintain walking control without auditory feedback. However, increases in step length observed during the Ear Plugs condition may indicate that temporal auditory cues provide locomotor feedback that becomes increasingly valuable as balance deteriorates with age.

- Effect of texturing on material properties of 3D printed prosthetic sockets
- Abstract:
- Fused deposition modelling can be used to 3D print prosthetic sockets with textured surfaces that may improve suspension by increasing the coefficient of friction (COF). However, bonding strength between material layers may be compromised. The aim of this technical note was to investigate the COF and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of differently textured prosthetic socket specimens using the American Society for Testing and Materials standards (ASTM D638-14 and D1894-14). Fourteen different textures were fabricated using the Squirt-Shape 3D Printer. Static COF, kinetic COF and UTS were compared to reference samples that included a smooth sheet of the same polypropylene copolymer. Specimens were prepared and tested using a hydraulic material testing system. COF was assessed using a one-way MANOVA, while UTS was assessed using a one-way ANOVA. There was a significant difference in static and kinetic COF (p<0.0005) based on texture. While some textured samples had a larger static COF than the smooth sample, all but one textured sample had a lower kinetic COF. All textured samples were significantly weaker than smooth samples (p<0.0005). These results provide an initial understanding of the effect of texturing on material properties, allowing us to select the most promising texture patterns for further investigation.

- Using mechanical testing to assess texturing of prosthetic sockets to improve suspension in the transverse plane and reduce rotation
- Abstract:
- Creating a secure and comfortable linkage between the residual limb and prosthetic socket in persons with lower limb amputation is a critical factor for successful rehabilitation, including ambulation and other activities of daily living. Unwanted rotation within the socket can be a clinical problem for prosthesis users. One way of addressing issues experienced with transverse plane control of the socket may be through increased friction interface forces. It has been proposed that friction at the residual limb/socket interface may be increased by adding texture to interface components. Three-dimensional (3D) printing may be used to fabricate sockets with texture patterns added to the inner socket surface. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of socket texturing on transverse plane rotation of the socket on a mock residual limb under two suspension conditions: passive suction and active vacuum. To conduct this study, we developed a mechanical testing protocol as no standardized tests currently exist to assess prosthetic sockets. Sockets with 14 different texture patterns were fabricated using the Squirt-Shape 3D printer. Textured sockets were compared to an Original Squirt-Shape (OSS) socket and a smooth thermoformed socket. Sockets were fitted with a mock residual limb and bi-axially loaded to 350 N compression with simultaneous rotation (2.5, 5 and 7.5) using a custom rotation assembly attached to a uniaxial hydraulic material testing system. There was a statistically significant three-way interaction between suspension, angle and texture (p < 0.0005). Torques between textured and reference sockets, for all rotation angles and both suspension conditions, were significantly different (p < 0.0005). Using newly developed testing protocols, it was demonstrated that some texture patterns significantly increased torque (i.e., resistance against unwanted rotation) in the transverse plane compared to both OSS and smooth sockets, especially for passive suction. Rotation testing of sockets may provide insight into socket design to improve suspension in the transverse plane.

- Using mechanical testing to assess the effect of prosthetic socket texturing on longitudinal suspension to reduce pistoning
- Abstract:
- To function effectively, a lower limb prosthetic socket must remain securely coupled to the residual limb during walking, running and other activities of daily living; this coupling is referred to as suspension. When this coupling is insufficient longitudinal pistoning of the socket relative to the residual limb occurs. Increasing friction of the socket/liner interface may improve socket suspension and textured sockets may be fabricated relatively easily with 3D printing. The aim of this study was to investigate longitudinal displacement of sockets with different types of textures under two suspension conditions: passive suction and active vacuum. In order to do this, we developed a mock residual limb and mechanical testing protocol. Prosthetic sockets, 14 textured sockets and an Original Squirt-Shape (OSS) Socket, were fabricated from polypropylene copolymer using the Squirt-Shape 3D Printer and compared to a smooth socket thermoformed from polypropylene copolymer. Sockets were mounted onto a dual durometer mock residual limb and subjected to four levels of distraction forces (100 N, 250 N, 500 N and 650 N) using a hydraulic material testing system. There was a statistically significant three-way interaction between suspension, force level and texture (p < 0.0005). Longitudinal displacements between textured and reference sockets, for all force levels and both suspension conditions, were significantly different (p < 0.0005). Using these newly developed mechanical testing protocols, it was demonstrated that texturing of polypropylene copolymer sockets fabricated using Squirt-Shape significantly decreased longitudinal displacements compared to a smooth socket. However, none of the novel textured sockets significantly reduced longitudinal displacement compared to the OSS socket under passive suction suspension.

- Down the rabbit hole we go again (the 19th Health Sciences Lively Lunchtime discussion): Developments 2018-2019
- Description:
- A handout prepared for and presented in synopsis during a brief (traditional) annual update of interesting and noteworthy trends in the health publishing and health information sectors that occurred or were noticed since the 2018 Health Sciences Lively Lunch at the Charleston Conference: Issues in Book and Serial Acquisition. (19th Lively Lunch took place on Thursday, November 7, 2019 in Charleston, SC).
- Abstract:
- After greetings from luncheon sponsor, Rittenhouse, the moderator, Rena Lubker, introduced the session and provided introductory remarks about this years three presentations: a commentary on issues that keep us up at night; a report on considerations to make when leaving big deal licenses and entering into new, OA friendly arrangements; and more discussion about the impact of expansions on libraries of academic medical affiliation. All three topics provided fodder for lively discussion by presenters and participants. Ramune Kubilius provided a brief annual update on health sciences publishing world developments. Are there trends or commonalities in the issues that concern health sciences collection managers across institutions? Susan Kendall, editor of a recent book on 21st century collection management, shared her thoughts on what keeps health sciences collection managers on their toes (or up at night). Participants prepared to agree or disagree with her list. What goes into planning, preparing and actively shifting towards a more open access friendly landscape? How do consortia make decisions to leave or enter into deals on behalf of a multi-type academic library system? Are the interests of health sciences libraries represented? Sarah McClung shared examples of recent collections decisions made by the University of California libraries and what lessons can be imparted to other libraries, including those licensing in smaller groups or even solo. The ever-changing academic library and affiliated hospital relationship landscape will again be explored. Jean Gudenas examined the effects of hospital mergers and acquisitions on academic libraries. She discussed the challenges with negotiating licensing changes quickly, the commitment to communication, and other matters essential to ensuring access to resources for the new affiliates.

- Invenio RDM : A collaborative, community-driven research data management platform
- Abstract:
- Research Data Management (RDM) platforms play an important role in todays research ecosystem to disseminate and archive, enable reproducibility, and empower reuse. RDM platforms allow researchers to share and preserve scientific results and support the sharing of a wide variety of resources, from publications and presentations to datasets, software, policy documents, and workflows. Research funding agencies around the world have also recognized the huge potential economic and social benefits of RDMs and support their use in research preservation and dissemination. CERN has partnered with 10 international multidisciplinary institutions and companies to build a turn-key open source research data management platform called Invenio RDM, and grow a diverse community to sustain the platform. We seek to make Invenio RDM a world-leading extensible research data management platform used by research institutions all around the world and with businesses providing services, support and customizations on top of Invenio RDM. Invenio RDM includes existing Zenodo features, such as DOI minting capabilities, versioning support, and COUNTER compliant usage statistics, to name a few. Transforming Zenodo into a general purpose RDM-platform will focus on improvements to the core repository (especially to support next-generation repository standards), packaging and distribution to support easy implementation, and customization and extendability. This presentation will provide an update to the community about this work, describe our development roadmap, share interdisciplinary key use cases for this work, and gather real-time audience input. This work is supported by the CERN Knowledge Transfer Fund; participating partners (to date) include: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Caltech Library, Data Futures, Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Northwestern University, OpenAIRE, TIND, Tubitak, Universitat Hamburg, and the University of Munster; and the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, Grant Number U24TR002306, to the US Center for Data to Health (CD2H).

- Description:
- Pre-print of "Personas for the Translational Workforce," an article under the review of the Journal of Clinical and Translational Science. Manuscript describes the methodology employed in the CTSA Program National Center for Data to Health (CD2H) CTS Personas project.
- Abstract:
- Twelve evidence-based profiles of roles across the translational workforce and two patients were made available through CTS Personas, a project of the CTSA Program National Center for Data to Health (CD2H). The persona profiles were designed and researched to demonstrate the key responsibilities, motivators, goals, software use, pain points, and professional development needs of those working across the spectrum of translation, from basic science to clinical research to public health. The projects goal was to provide reliable documents that could be used to inform CTSA software development projects, educational resources, and communication initiatives. This paper presents the initiative to create personas for the translational workforce, including the methodology, engagement strategy, and lessons learned. Challenges faced and successes achieved by the project may serve as a roadmap for others searching for best practices in the creation of Persona profiles.

- Abstract:
- Introduction: Comprehensive Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (CPACHE) aim to create stable and long-term partnerships between minority serving institutions and NCI designated Cancer Centers. All CPACHEs are expected to achieve the following objectives: 1) Increase participation of minority serving institutions and underrepresented students in the nations cancer research and training enterprise; 2) Produce more competitive grant applications from underrepresented scientists; 3) Increase competitive research capacity at minority serving institutions; 4) Increase involvement and effectiveness of cancer centers in research and training related to underserved populations; 5) Develop more effective research, outreach, and education programs that will have an impact on health disparity populations; and 6) Enhance research in cancer health disparities at cancer centers. Evaluation is a key component to successful and sustainable partnerships. In recent years, funding agencies have called for a collaborative approach among partnerships. This abstract describes collaborative efforts undertaken to implement a participatory evaluation plan for CPACHEs.Methods: During a grantee workshop in July, 2018 Principal Investigators determined it was imperative to develop common metrics to support individual partnership evaluation and enable a better understanding of the CPACHE program nationally. A taskforce comprised of evaluators from each partnership and one NCI Program representative was established. The goals of the taskforce were: 1) To develop an integrated evaluation matrix with process and impact outcomes for each of the six objectives 2) To share best practices and resources for tracking, measuring and reporting progress toward each objective. Results: During a six month period, the CPACHE taskforce has made significant progress toward achieving its goals by: 1) Establishing communication channels, including a mailing list and monthly conference calls; 2) Mobilizing each partnership to develop a program specific evaluation matrix; 3) Developing an integrated evaluation matrix utilizing common metrics; 4) Using an NIH-supported online platform to exchange tools used for tracking and measuring outcomes; 5) Vetting the evaluation matrix with leadership at NCI and individual program PIs; 6) Utilizing surveys to facilitate discussion and inform best practices; and 7) Establishing a model of shared participation by allowing taskforce members to facilitate meetings, and discuss objectives one at a time. Conclusion: The collaborative development of CPACHE performance standards will help each partnership conduct more relevant and effective cancer research, training, outreach, and education aimed at advancing cancer health equity. Significant engagement, participation, and commitment from all stakeholders is critical for a successful evaluation process. Implementation of the evaluation matrix will inform NCI evaluation focused on the impact of the CPACHE program.

- Medical Archives and History: Local Informal Network Support and Shared Expertise of CAMA
- Description:
- Poster presented at the Health Science Librarians of Illinois (HSLI) annual conference in Champaign, IL on September 12-13, 2019.
- Abstract:
- Institutional records, photographs, archives, and artifacts, especially at smaller health institutions, do not always receive formal or sustained attention and staffing. Yet the demand for expertise and services in this area often arises. An informal network of colleagues can provide support for both novice and experienced information professionals, who are charged with organizing their institutions archives or answering internal and external medical history questions, often in addition to other duties. One Illinois group that has been trying to serve in this capacity since 2002 has been the Chicago Area Medical Archivists. As an informal, open membership group of archivists, librarians, healthcare professionals, and others interested in Chicago area medical history, CAMA complements HSLI and other organizations. Members work at various professional and clinical specialty associations, academic medical centers, universities, hospitals, and are local historians as well as independent researchers. The group serves as a network to share information, expertise, and resources- through meetings and a mailing list that includes questions, responses, as well as announcements. In recognition of October being American Archives Month, CAMA sponsors an (almost) annual free Fall medical history symposium. At symposia, CAMA members and researchers share findings and interesting facts about individuals, as well as moments in Chicago area medical history, discovered in Chicago area archives and libraries. Symposium host institutions often hold open houses of their archives and special collections. The aims of this poster were to spotlight CAMA as a resource and support network in Illinois, and to share highlights of its activities: shared best practices and information, as well as sample local medical history symposia topics. Summary results of an informal survey of current CAMA list subscribers highlighted responses regarding: priorities in preserving medical institutional memory, misconceptions about medical archives, and issues worthy of attention in evolving Chicago area medical institutions.

- DNA Methylation of Individual Repetitive Elements in Hepatitis C Virus Infection-Induced Hepatocellular Carcinoma
- Description:
- The two most common repetitive elements (REs) in humans, long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1) and Alu element (Alu), have been linked to various cancers. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) may cause hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by suppressing host defenses, through DNA methylation that controls the mobilization of REs. We aimed to investigate the role of RE methylation in HCV-induced HCC (HCV-HCC).
