- Title:
- Strainbow
- Description:
- 2019 Honorable Mention, Northwestern Scientific Images Contest. The vivid colors and patterns you see are a result of birefringence, which is an optical property of anisotropic materials. Ordinary objects, like this plastic dish and tube undergo stress during manufacturing as the plastic is molded into its desired form. When you observe these objects through crossed polarizers, you are able to see the stress in the object as birefringent signal zones. Birefringence can tell us important information about the mechanical properties of various materials, such as crystals and polymers.

- This image originally appeared as part of Northwestern Scientific Images Contest. The contest and subsequent exhibitions are organized by Science in Society, the University's research center for science education and public engagement. Further information and opportunities to participate

- Description:
- Related URL refers to the software: https://sites.northwestern.edu/stattag/
- Abstract:
- StatTag is a free plug-in for conducting reproducible research and creating dynamic documents using Microsoft Word with the Stata and SAS statistical software (future versions will work with R). StatTag allows users to embed statistical output (estimates, tables, and figures) within Word and provides an interface to edit statistical code directly from Word. Statistical output can be individually or collectively updated from Word in one-click with a behind-the-scenes call to the statistical program. With StatTag, modification of a dataset or analysis no longer entails transcribing or re-copying results in to a manuscript or table.

- Starting Out With Dissemination: 5 Steps For Departments, Centers, and Institutes
- Description:
- This infographic was designed to assist departments, centers, and institutes in creating a reasonable dissemination plan for their scholars' works.
- Abstract:
- Research shows that scholarly outputs with social media engagement are more likely to be cited when compared to similar works. Departments, centers, and institutes can use their online presence to promote their scholars work by providing a larger platform for that work to be discovered, discussed, and used by many different audiences. By developing a reasonable workflow, departments can easily enhance the dissemination of their scholars work across several online platforms.

- Original Bibliographic Citation:
- Starting from scratch – building the perfect digital repository - Piotr Hebal, Violeta Ilik, and Kristi Holmes - Open Repositories 2015, Indianapolis, IN, June 9, 2015
- Abstract:
- By establishing a digital repository for the Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) (Northwestern University, Chicago campus), we anticipate gaining the ability to create, share, and preserve attractive, functional, and citable digital collections and exhibits. Galter Health Sciences Library did not have a repository as of November 2014. In just a few months we formed a small team that was charged at looking to select the most suitable open source platform for our digital repository software. We followed the National Library of Medicine master evaluation criteria by looking at various factors that included: functionality, scalability, extensibility, interoperability, ease of deployment, system security, system, physical environment, platform support, demonstrated successful deployments, system support, strength of development community, stability of development organization, and strength of technology roadmap for the future. These factors are important for our case considering the desire to connect the digital repository with platforms that produce VIVO compatible structured linked data. VIVO is a linked data platform that serves as a researchers’ hub and which provides the names of researchers from academic institutions along with their research output, affiliation, research overview, service, background, researcher’s identities, teaching, and much more.

- Stained Glass Petri Dish
- Description:
- 2019 Honorable Mention, Northwestern Scientific Images Contest. When growing cells outside the body, it is important to give them a safe place to attach and lay down roots. Like how plants need fertile soil, cells need nutrients to survive for long periods of time in a petri dish. One way to address this problem is to coat the surface of the dish with a biomaterial before laying the cells down. Researchers took this image to study the stability of the coating after 60 days. They made a scratch mark on the surface to measure the thickness of the coating. The instrument then colors the image by height. The red areas are peaks, and the blue areas are valleys. The height variation in this image is due to salts that were present as the coating dried. This caused the final image to appear like stained glass.

- Title:
- Split woman
- Description:
- Honorable Mention, By 2030, the aging US population will need over 500,000 hip implants each year. This image shows a cobalt and chromium alloy used in these implants. Images like these help researchers study defects which can lead to corrosion and break down in hip replacements. This sample of the metal alloy is only 100 nanometers thick - 100 times thinner than a human hair. At this microscopic scale, we can see variations in the metals crystal structure (here, the black, curving lines show where the sheet is bending). Studying these metals in detail helps researchers design better biomaterials and safer, longer-lasting implants.
- Abstract:
- This image originally appeared as part of Northwestern's Scientific Images Contest. The contest and subsequent exhibitions are organized by Science in Society, the university's research center for science education and public engagement. Further information and opportunities to participate are available on their website. Prints and canvas editions of these Northwestern research images can also be purchased online (with the small net profit going to science education and outreach programming in the Chicago area).

- Study Design: Cross-sectional observational cohort study. Objective: To investigate preparation, response, and economic impact of COVID-19 on private, public, academic, and privademic spine surgeons. Methods: AO Spine COVID-19 and Spine Surgeon Global Impact Survey includes domains on surgeon demographics, location of practice, type of practice, COVID-19 perceptions, institutional preparedness and response, personal and practice impact, and future perceptions. The survey was distributed by AO Spine via email to members (n = 3805). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify differences between practice settings. Results: A total of 902 surgeons completed the survey. In all, 45.4% of respondents worked in an academic setting, 22.9% in privademics, 16.1% in private practice, and 15.6% in public hospitals. Academic practice setting was independently associated with performing elective and emergent spine surgeries at the time of survey distribution. A majority of surgeons reported a >75% decrease in case volume. Private practice and privademic surgeons reported losing income at a higher rate compared with academic or public surgeons. Practice setting was associated with personal protective equipment availability and economic issues as a source of stress. Conclusions: The current study indicates that practice setting affected both preparedness and response to COVID-19. Surgeons in private and privademic practices reported increased worry about the economic implications of the current crisis compared with surgeons in academic and public hospitals. COVID-19 decreased overall clinical productivity, revenue, and income. Government response to the current pandemic and preparation for future pandemics needs to be adaptable to surgeons in all practice settings.

796. Special Snowflake
- Title:
- Special Snowflake
- Description:
- 2015 Third Place, Scientists can press pause on cells in action by rapidly freezing them. The cells must be frozen incredibly quickly --within the blink of an eye. If the freezing process is too slow, the water inside (which makes up most of the cell) forms ice crystals. This microscopic image shows the very early stages of one such snowflake growing. If left to grow each of the six, symmetrical points would continue to branch out, developing into an intricate snowflake visible to the naked eye.In experiments like this one Whittaker and his lab freeze sea urchin cells by plunging them into liquid ethane. When frozen fast enough (and scientists avoid creating snowflakes), researchers can observe cells orchestrating the growth of skeletons. This helps us to understand biomineralization: the process of how bodies grow bones, teeth and other hard biological tissues.Department of Materials Science & EngineeringTools & Techniques: Scanning Electron Microscope + colored in Photoshop
