- Abstract:
- In this year's sponsored, but no holds barred lunch, participants contemplated examples of proactive approaches answering the question posed by the 2015 conference theme, “Where Do We Go From Here?”. After greetings from the lunch host, Rittenhouse, and the traditional brief “year in review” recap by Ramune Kubilius, three panelists shared insights and open the floor for lively discussion with session participants. Researchers increasingly must meet various data management requirements and mandates, while educators are challenged by changing trends in providing curricular content. Where does that leave libraries? In the best case scenarios, they utilize approaches espoused in Yogi Berra’s advice—they follow paths (opportunities) that present themselves, and become partners. Cunera Buys described work she and Pamela Shaw (Biosciences & Bioinformatics Librarian, Northwestern University’s Galter Health Sciences Library) did in the data management planning arena, as part of a university working group. She touched on differing disciplinary needs and how data management affects scholarly publishing and communication activities. Are alternate open textbooks a solution for educators seeking health sciences curricular reading materials? Elizabeth Lorbeer discussed the current environment, experiments, and roles (“reinvented” expertise) librarians can share in order to help faculty and students. Finally, before moving to longer lively discussion, moderator Jean Gudenas rounded out the panel by sharing examples of recent developments and experiments, how libraries strive to demonstrate value in the collections and document delivery arena.

- If the past is prologue to the future, where are we today? Though they are diverse, most academic health sciences libraries have historically described and continue to outline their missions as being directed to serving the education, research, and clinical information needs of their user populations. Over the years, Charleston Conference Health Sciences Lively Lunches have covered many themes, and in 2012, the focus was on the point of care information tools landscape. The 2017 Lively Lunch focused on issues and challenges of providing clinicians and clinical affiliates with access not only to point of care tools, but in general, to varied types of online information resources, often in a changing or volatile marketplace. After a welcome by a representative of Rittenhouse Book Distributors, Inc., the lunch host, and a traditional update by Ramune Kubilius (Northwestern University), moderator Jean Gudenas (Medical University of South Carolina) introduced this years hosted but no holds barred session. Panelists from health sciences libraries at three different institutions- Laura Schimming from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Jonathan Shank from Northwestern University; Neal Nixon and Vida Vaughn from University of Louisville, outlined their experiences. They addressed demands, challenges, and best practices of issues that included but were not limited to: users information needs as well as academic and hospital administrators expectations; expanding clinical affiliate networks; budgets-projected, desired, and actual; publishers and consortia partners licensing models, guidelines, and restrictions. Ample time was left for Lively Lunch attendees to join the discussion with questions as well as shared insights and experience.

The exhibit was organized by the National Library of Medicine and was sponsored by the Galter Health Sciences Library, the Institute for Womens Health Research and the Northwestern Medical Women Faculty Organization. Sponsoring units presented posters during the exhibit demonstrating how women have changed the face of medicine at Northwestern. In addition, a panel of notable Northwestern women discussed their contributions to medicine and health care in the areas of research, education, and clinical care in Hughes Auditorium on December 7, 2009 at 3:00PM. The panel members were: Neena B. Schwartz, PhD, Teresa W. Woodruff, PhD, Erica Marsh, MD, MSCI, and Candace Tingen, BS, BA. A reception followed at 4:30PM.

- Honorable Mention, Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Here, two materials work together: a network of peptide nanofibers (red) has grown hairs of polymer chains (green). The red nanofibers mimic natural brain structures. The green polymer chains are a strong and biocompatible material. In the hybrid shown here (in yellow), the best properties of both parents combine into one new material -- which is ideally suited to guide and support brain cells during development. The chemist and neurobiologist who created this material are collaborating just like their invention to develop new materials to be used in the next generation of regenerative medicine.
