- TOXMAP data review. Carbon monitoring for action (CARMA)
- Description:
- This report describes a special project on selecting data for TOXMAP. This report was completed on January 23, 2013 for work completed between October 2012 through January 2013.
- Abstract:
- Carbon Monitoring for Action (CARMA) was launched in 2007and is the first global inventory of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions for the energy sector. As a dataset, CARMA contains information about the carbon emissions of power companies worldwide. When used in conjunction with mapping software, CARMA provides the location, ownership and emissions of all the power plants in the world.

- Developing Educational Videos about National Library of Medicine K-12 Resources : Spring Project Report, August 16, 2013
- Description:
- This report describes a special project create an education video about the U.S. National Library of Medicine's genetic resources. This report was completed on August 15, 2013 for work completed between January through August 2013.
- Abstract:
- Background: The National Library of Medicine has several K-12 resources in the areas of science and health education. The project involved creating a short, engaging video to promote some of the resources, explain the basic features of the resource, and provide tips for using the resources in the classroom. Objective. The purpose of the project was to create a 3-4 minute educational video covering NLMs K-12 genetics resources. Methods: The project was accomplished by focusing on three K-12 genetic resources: Genetics Home Reference, Harry Potters World, and GeneEd. In order to provide context, the Associate Fellow reviewed 9th-12th grade national science curriculum standards, and reviewed the genetic contents of several often used science textbooks. Four teachers were contacted and asked to review the K-12 genetic resources. They were interviewed about their experiences with their responses captured on video. Two classroom settings were video-taped, one a mock setting and the other a real-life setting. The video was edited and produced using the Camtasia software. Results: Two videos were produced as a result of the project. One video explores all three genetic resources, Genetics Home Reference, Harry Potters World, and GeneEd. The second video focuses on the newest resource, GeneEd. While the project was successful, it was filled with challenges because of software and hardware issues. The resulting videos will be used at teachers conferences and perhaps be placed on the GeneEd website. Conclusion: Educational videos provide a rich medium to appropriately market the features of helpful resources to teachers and students. The video filming, editing and production process is complex and not to be undertaken lightly.

- Extending JATS to include the NISO/NFAIS Recommended Practices for Online Supplemental Journal Article Materials
- Description:
- This paper was presented on April 01, 2014 for JATSCon 2014/2015 in Bethesda, Maryland.
- Abstract:
- This paper discusses our experience of creating an extension for JATS that incorporates the NISO "Recommended Practices for Online Supplemental Journal Article Materials" (NISO RP-2013). We will discuss our analysis of the recommendations and our comparison of the recommendations with JATS, as well as our thrashing over language and terminology associated with supplementary materials and our eventual creation of the extension. The extension is not part of the official JATS specification; it is a local extension that will be made publicly available for community use and discussion.

- Delivery Pattern of Multiple Births in the Last 30 Years in the USA
- Abstract:
- Over 120 million births were analyzed for the study period from 1983 thru 2012. Overall the births for singleton and multiple births for every week of gestation are occurring relatively earlier in the latter part of the period, 2010-2012 compared to the earlier, 1983-1988. Earlier births were more common in the non-Hispanic blacks, unmarried, teenage or advanced maternal age mother, and pregnancies with maternal risk factors.
