- Measuring Success Through Improved Attribution
- Description:
- Presentation at the VIVO 2015 Conference, August 14, 2015, Cambridge, MA
- Abstract:
- Measuring success through improved attribution As data science and informatics transform scholarly activities, the structure and composition of the typical scientific team is changing. Professionals from diverse backgrounds are now contributing fundamentally to discoveries and creative scholarly outputs, often in ways that cannot be quantified through traditional metrics of scholarly impact. To credit and evaluate the work of these important collaborators, we need mechanisms to capture such contributions. VIVO is well positioned to assist in the development of a standard mechanism for attribution and subsequent citation of these individuals creative contributions. With the goal of leading the way toward a computational model for collecting and disseminating contributor attribution data, this panel aims to identify stakeholders (researchers, developers, publishers, agencies), assess attribution requirements, and provide an interactive community forum to define innovative approaches to scientific attribution. Follow the conversation in this interactive session at #VIVOcredit.

- Hands on Scenario Descriptions of Formulas and Charts
- Abstract:
- Data visualization is used to communicate complex information and explore trends in large sources of data. Compelling data visualization requires thoughtful planning and execution; from understanding the data, choosing the right chart, balancing visual cues, and providing narratives to tell interesting stories. This course gives attendees a strong foundation in the principles of data visualization. In addition attendees will use Microsoft Excel, a common but incredibly powerful tool, to visualize library-relevant data through a series of hands-on activities. Attendees will gain practical and immediately useful skills for visualizing both qualitative and quantitative data.

- Title:
- Invenio RDM : A collaborative, community-driven research data management platform
- Abstract:
- Research Data Management (RDM) platforms play an important role in todays research ecosystem to disseminate and archive, enable reproducibility, and empower reuse. RDM platforms allow researchers to share and preserve scientific results and support the sharing of a wide variety of resources, from publications and presentations to datasets, software, policy documents, and workflows. Research funding agencies around the world have also recognized the huge potential economic and social benefits of RDMs and support their use in research preservation and dissemination. CERN has partnered with 10 international multidisciplinary institutions and companies to build a turn-key open source research data management platform called Invenio RDM, and grow a diverse community to sustain the platform. We seek to make Invenio RDM a world-leading extensible research data management platform used by research institutions all around the world and with businesses providing services, support and customizations on top of Invenio RDM. Invenio RDM includes existing Zenodo features, such as DOI minting capabilities, versioning support, and COUNTER compliant usage statistics, to name a few. Transforming Zenodo into a general purpose RDM-platform will focus on improvements to the core repository (especially to support next-generation repository standards), packaging and distribution to support easy implementation, and customization and extendability. This presentation will provide an update to the community about this work, describe our development roadmap, share interdisciplinary key use cases for this work, and gather real-time audience input. This work is supported by the CERN Knowledge Transfer Fund; participating partners (to date) include: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Caltech Library, Data Futures, Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Northwestern University, OpenAIRE, TIND, Tubitak, Universitat Hamburg, and the University of Munster; and the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, Grant Number U24TR002306, to the US Center for Data to Health (CD2H).

- Subject Semantic Interoperability : Final Report of the Subcommittee on Semantic Interoperability to the ALCTS Subject Analysis Committee (Chicago : Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, 2006)
- Abstract:
- An information system managing its own subject access for a single resource can relatively easily produce a successful database. However, there is an increasing need to access multiple resources in multiple languages or with multiple thesauri or controlled vocabularies. To a point, multiple controlled vocabularies and knowledge organization systems (KOS) can be made to interoperate. However, without appropriate design, the resulting search results will be non-semantic and of little value to users. Given that converging information systems with theiridiosyncratic histories and social functions are likely to produce overlaps, seams, and gaps in the compositewhole, the Subject Analysis Committee formed the Subcommittee on Semantic Interoperability to investigate what techniques are currently being employed by developers to minimize loss of meaning and create true semantic interoperability.

- Materia Medica and Herbal Highlights from Special Collections
- Description:
- Catalog of an exhibit featuring medical texts that describe the use of medicinal herbs throughout history. The exhibit was held at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital and ran April-May 2013. It was a collaboration between Northwestern Memorial Hospital's archives (Sue Sacharski, NMH Archivist) and the Galter Health Sciences Library Special Collections (Ron Sims, Special Collections Librarian). The banners in the exhibit from the archives were from several previous installations. Created by internationally acclaimed artist Norman LaLiberte for the lobby of Northwestern Memorial Hospitals Wesley Pavilion (now site of Prentice Womens Hospital), the banners were first used in 1973.

- Anniversaries and Commemorations: Opportunities for Health Sciences Librarians
- Description:
- Updated version of presentation given in the "Lightning Talks" segment of the 2018 Health Science Librarians of Illinois (HSLI) annual conference with its theme, "Rivers of Data, Streams of Knowledge", held September 26-28, 2018 in Rockford, IL.
- Abstract:
- Two hundred years ago, on December 3, 1818, Illinois became the 21st state in the Union. One hundred years ago, three small countries, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, declared their independence as free-standing democratic nations. 2021 will mark the one hundredth anniversary of a brief visit to the United States (including the Chicago area) by noted researcher, Marie Curie. 2017 marked the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book. How did these historical milestones become opportunities? Though this arena may often be the work and purview of archivists (or others), what are some ways health sciences librarians can contribute and showcase their skills? The avenues of involvement may differ and results can be varied- a group project, a presentation, an exhibit, or an event. This presentation offers a few examples of how a librarians interest in medical history provided opportunities to collaborate, to utilize reference and other skills, was professionally satisfying, while also being relevant to larger institutional missions and goals. [This lightning talk builds in part on a poster presented at 2017 HSLI and Midwest Chapter/MLA conferences, and a presentation made at the 2018 Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies conference at Stanford University].
