- Workshop Evaluation Form
- Description:
- The Dissemination, Impact, and Access Workshop for Programs, Centers, and Institutes at Northwestern University was held on Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 9:45 a.m. 3:30 p.m. All program assistants, program coordinators, program managers, research administrators (and other similar titles!) were invited for the one-day interactive workshop hosted by Galter Library and NUCATS. Lunch was provided by Galter Health Sciences Library.
- Abstract:
- This workshop had sessions on: Dissemination. How do you make your program's work more visible? Dissemination is much more than publishing in journals. Learn about making a dissemination plan, using social media, and see dissemination in action. Impact. Do you know how the research community is using your program's outputs? Impact can be challenging not only to track, but also to write about. Learn how to efficiently track scholarly work and creatively describe impact. Access. Even brilliant research can go unnoticed if it's not accessible. Learn how to make your program's research accessible in many avenues and brush up on complying with federal policies.

- Working better together
- Description:
- Honorable Mention, Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Here, two materials work together: a network of peptide nanofibers (red) has grown hairs of polymer chains (green). The red nanofibers mimic natural brain structures. The green polymer chains are a strong and biocompatible material. In the hybrid shown here (in yellow), the best properties of both parents combine into one new material -- which is ideally suited to guide and support brain cells during development. The chemist and neurobiologist who created this material are collaborating just like their invention to develop new materials to be used in the next generation of regenerative medicine.
- Abstract:
- This image originally appeared as part of Northwestern's Scientific Images Contest. The contest and subsequent exhibitions are organized by Science in Society, the university's research center for science education and public engagement. Further information and opportunities to participate are available on their website. Prints and canvas editions of these Northwestern research images can also be purchased online (with the small net profit going to science education and outreach programming in the Chicago area).

- Abstract:
- The traveling exhibit describes the remarkable progress women have made in professional training, achieving diversity and providing leadership in health care. Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians begins with Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn an M.D. degree in America in 1849, and ends with women physicians today, who have achieved success in work once considered "unsuitable" for a woman.

- Where Are We? Providing Information for the Clinical Enterprise (17th Health Sciences Lively Lunch) [presentation at 2017 Charleston Conference, November 9, 2017, Charleston, SC]
- Abstract:
- If the past is prologue to the future, where are we today? Though they are diverse, most academic health sciences libraries have historically described and continue to outline their missions as being directed to serving the education, research, and clinical information needs of their user populations. Over the years, Charleston Conference Health Sciences Lively Lunches have covered many themes, and in 2012, the focus was on the point of care information tools landscape. The 2017 Lively Lunch focused on issues and challenges of providing clinicians and clinical affiliates with access not only to point of care tools, but in general, to varied types of online information resources, often in a changing or volatile marketplace. After a welcome by a representative of Rittenhouse Book Distributors, Inc., the lunch host, and a traditional update by Ramune Kubilius (Northwestern University), moderator Jean Gudenas (Medical University of South Carolina) introduced this years hosted but no holds barred session. Panelists from health sciences libraries at three different institutions- Laura Schimming from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Jonathan Shank from Northwestern University; Neal Nixon and Vida Vaughn from University of Louisville, outlined their experiences. They addressed demands, challenges, and best practices of issues that included but were not limited to: users information needs as well as academic and hospital administrators expectations; expanding clinical affiliate networks; budgets-projected, desired, and actual; publishers and consortia partners licensing models, guidelines, and restrictions. Ample time was left for Lively Lunch attendees to join the discussion with questions as well as shared insights and experience.

- When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It (15th Annual Health Sciences Lively Lunch): Developments 2014-2015
- Description:
- Handout prepared for and presented in synopsis during a brief (traditional) annual update of interesting and noteworthy trends in the health publishing and health information sectors that occurred or were noticed since the 2014 Health Sciences Lively Lunch at the Charleston Conference: Issues in Book and Serial Acquisition. - Original Bibliographic Citation:
- When You Come to a Fork in the Road: Take It (15th Annual Health Sciences Lively Lunch) [presentation at 2015 Charleston Conference, November 6, 2015, Charleston, SC]
- Abstract:
- In this year's sponsored, but no holds barred lunch, participants contemplated examples of proactive approaches answering the question posed by the 2015 conference theme, “Where Do We Go From Here?”. After greetings from the lunch host, Rittenhouse, and the traditional brief “year in review” recap by Ramune Kubilius, three panelists shared insights and open the floor for lively discussion with session participants. Researchers increasingly must meet various data management requirements and mandates, while educators are challenged by changing trends in providing curricular content. Where does that leave libraries? In the best case scenarios, they utilize approaches espoused in Yogi Berra’s advice—they follow paths (opportunities) that present themselves, and become partners. Cunera Buys described work she and Pamela Shaw (Biosciences & Bioinformatics Librarian, Northwestern University’s Galter Health Sciences Library) did in the data management planning arena, as part of a university working group. She touched on differing disciplinary needs and how data management affects scholarly publishing and communication activities. Are alternate open textbooks a solution for educators seeking health sciences curricular reading materials? Elizabeth Lorbeer discussed the current environment, experiments, and roles (“reinvented” expertise) librarians can share in order to help faculty and students. Finally, before moving to longer lively discussion, moderator Jean Gudenas rounded out the panel by sharing examples of recent developments and experiments, how libraries strive to demonstrate value in the collections and document delivery arena.

- When Worlds Collide
- Description:
- Honorable Mention, We have discovered thousands of planets outside our own Solar System. Some of these exoplanet systems are much more tightly packed than ours. In such a system, what would happen if two planets the size of Jupiter collided? This team designed highly-specialized computer programs to model what might happen. This image shows the simulated planetary system shortly after collision. The two circles represent the planets original orbits. (They crashed where the orbits were very close together on the right-hand side.) The spiraling cloud is plan-etary matter sprayed out across the system. The bright object near the bottom of the image could be a new planet forming from the remains--notice how it no longer follows either of the original orbits. Some currently observed exoplanets may have undergone such a collision (or collisions) many years ago. Cutting-edge simulations like these help us understand how planets form and how they can change over time. Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration & Research in Astrophysics (CIERA)Tools & Techniques: Computer simulation laid over a NASA Kepler telescope image

- Coincident with the tsunami of COVID-19-related publications, there has been a surge of studies using real-world data, including those obtained from the electronic health record (EHR). Unfortunately, several of these high-profile publications were retracted because of concerns regarding the soundness and quality of the studies and the EHR data they purported to analyze. These retractions highlight that although a small community of EHR informatics experts can readily identify strengths and flaws in EHR-derived studies, many medical editorial teams and otherwise sophisticated medical readers lack the framework to fully critically appraise these studies. In addition, conventional statistical analyses cannot overcome the need for an understanding of the opportunities and limitations of EHR-derived studies. We distill here from the broader informatics literature six key considerations that are crucial for appraising studies utilizing EHR data: data completeness, data collection and handling (eg, transformation), data type (ie, codified, textual), robustness of methods against EHR variability (within and across institutions, countries, and time), transparency of data and analytic code, and the multidisciplinary approach. These considerations will inform researchers, clinicians, and other stakeholders as to the recommended best practices in reviewing manuscripts, grants, and other outputs from EHR-data derived studies, and thereby promote and foster rigor, quality, and reliability of this rapidly growing field.

- Abstract:
- It is understood that in the current library ecosystem, catalogers must be willing to adapt to new semantic web environment while keeping in mind the crucial library mission providing efficient access to information. How could catalogers transform their jobs in order to enable library users to retrieve information more effectively in the age of semantic web? Researchers have argued that catalogers have the fundamental skills to successfully work with and repurpose the metadata originally created for use in traditional library systems by utilizing various programing languages. In the new environment their jobs will require new tools and new systems but the basic skills of organization of information, knowledge of commonly used access points, and an ever growing knowledge of information technology systems will still be the same. This presentation will stress the role of catalogers in bringing the data silos down, merging, augmenting, and creating interoperable data that can be used not just in library specific systems, but in various other systems. Catalogers indispensable knowledge of controlled vocabularies, authority aggregators, metadata creation, metadata reuse, taxonomies, and data stores makes it all possible. We will demonstrate how catalogers knowledge can be leveraged to design an institutional repository and/or a researchers profiling system, create semantic web compliant data, create ontologies, utilize unique identifiers, and (re)use data from legacy systems.

- Water Farm
- Description:
- 2019 Honorable Mention, Northwestern Scientific Images Contest. Water vapor condenses into droplets when it encounters a cold surface. The surface was made to be a wavy pattern. Condensed droplets periodically change in size from the apex to the valley, just like strawberries growing on a freshly tilled farm. The first mature strawberry in the middle (dyed in red intentionally) suggests the harvesting season is coming.

- Waltz of the filaments
- Description:
- Honorable Mention, This image shows a single cell called a fibroblast. This type of cell is involved in wound healing. Fibroblasts contain flexible filaments made of vimentin, a protein which helps cells change shape and move. Researchers study these filaments and their movement to understand how they work in our cells. The microscopic filaments inside the cell are revealed by staining them with fluorescent dye. This dye glows when exposed to laser light. Then a picture is taken with a special microscope. In this image, thick bundles of filaments appear in bright yellow, while individual filaments at the edge of the cell appear in violet.

- Title:
- Walking with Ears: Altered Auditory Feedback Impacts Gait Step Length in Older Adults
- Description:
- Three spreadsheets containing the average (mean) and variability (standard deviation) of the step data, as well as the demographic information, collected across all 20 participants and 6 conditions associated with the study titled "Walking with Ears: Altered Auditory Feedback Impacts Gait Step Length in Older Adults."
- Abstract:
- Auditory feedback may provide the nervous system with valuable temporal (e.g. footsteps) and spatial (e.g. external reference sounds) information that can assist in the control of upright walking. As such, hearing loss may directly contribute to declines in mobility among older adults. Our purpose was to examine the impact of auditory feedback on walking in older adults. Twenty older adults with no diagnosed hearing loss walked on a treadmill for three sound conditions: Baseline, Ear Plugs, and White Noise. We hypothesized that in response to reduced temporal auditory feedback during the Ear Plugs and White Noise conditions, participants would adapt shorter and faster steps that are traditionally believed to increase mechanical stability. This hypothesis was not supported. Interestingly, we observed increases in step length (p=0.047) and step time (p=0.026) during the Ear Plugs condition versus Baseline. Taking longer steps during the Ear Plugs condition may have increased ground reaction forces, thus allowing participants to sense footsteps via an occlusion effect. As a follow-up, we performed a Pearsons correlation relating the step length increase during the Ear Plugs condition to participants scores on a clinical walking balance test, the Functional Gait Assessment. We found a moderate negative relationship (rho=-0.44, p=0.055) indicating that participants with worse balance made the greatest increases in step length during the Ear Plugs condition. This finding suggests that participants may have actively sought auditory feedback with longer steps, sacrificing a more mechanically stable stepping pattern. We also hypothesized that reduced spatial localization feedback during the Ear Plugs and White Noise conditions would decrease control of center of mass (COM) dynamics, resulting in an increase in lateral COM excursion, lateral margin of stability, and short-term Lyapunov exponent. However, we found no main effects of auditory feedback on these metrics (p=0.580, p=0.896, and p=0.056, respectively). Overall, these results suggest that during a steady-state walking task, healthy older adults can maintain walking control without auditory feedback. However, increases in step length observed during the Ear Plugs condition may indicate that temporal auditory cues provide locomotor feedback that becomes increasingly valuable as balance deteriorates with age.

- Title:
- Vitamin D, age, sex and skin pigmentation: An analysisof how recommendations and standards regarding vitamin D need more comprehensive research for policy
- Abstract:
- Vitamin D has long been implicated in health research with its etiology hypothesized in many diseases. As recently as 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM), appointed a committee of 14 scientists to re-evaluate the 1994 dietary reference intakes for calcium and vitamin D as ample new research had been conducted to warrant an evaluation of vitamin D supplementation. The efforts were supported by the United States and Canadian governments. Research was evaluated and new recommendations were established. However, the committee of scientists, supported by IOM staff, continues to use the same evaluation methods for vitamin D as they do for all vitamin dietary recommendations, but vitamin D is not a vitamin in the traditional sense. It is a pro-hormone. Vitamin D is not gained solely from diet. It is more readily produced via the conversion of cholesterol to vitamin D through sun exposure. Therefore, traditional methods of evaluation to deduce dietary intakes may not apply for a vitamin that is environmentally influenced. While many scientists are adamant that the recommendation levels for vitamin D should be higher and not all population sub-group dietary needs are being addressed, new methods of evaluation may be what are warranted. It is vital that researchers evaluate novel ways to understand vitamin D and the implications for nutritional policy in the form of dietary recommendations to create more comprehensive recommendation for vitamin D dietary needs. Currently, dietary recommendations are created for life-stage (age range) and sex, but more comprehensive listings by latitude, skin pigmentation, and adiposity might provide for the needs of more individuals.
